How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Developer? 2026 Rates by Region and Model
Most engineering leads treat the cost of hiring a developer as a single number on a rate card. The rate is the part that is easy to compare and the part that decides the least. What actually moves the total is recruitment friction, onboarding lag, and the rework caused by decisions made by someone who did not stay long enough to live with them.
The cost to hire a developer splits into three parts: the published rate, the time you spend managing the arrangement, and the rework you pay for later. This guide gives the published numbers first — by region and by engagement model, every figure traceable to a source — and then the parts of the cost that never appear on an invoice.
Disclosure: we sell two of the three models compared below, and our own published rate is in the table with everyone else’s. We have also stated where each model, ours included, is the wrong purchase.

What developers actually cost, by region
Published hourly bands, taken from vendor profiles on Clutch and from rate reports with a stated methodology. All figures checked in August 2026.
| Region | Published hourly band | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| United States — product and agency firms | $100–$300 | High — four vendor profiles, corroborated by an independent rate guide |
| United States — Clutch platform average | $50–$99 | Conflicts with the row above. See note |
| Canada | $100–$149 | Low — platform aggregate only |
| United Kingdom | Largely undisclosed | UK vendors rarely publish rates at all |
| Central and Eastern Europe (PL, UA, EE) | $50–$99 | High — multiple vendor profiles plus two independent reports |
| Europe, senior blended | $64–$76 | Medium — one report, Nov 2025 |
| Latin America | $25–$99, senior $50–$90 | High — three independent sources converge |
| South and Southeast Asia | Under $25–$49 | High — vendor profiles plus two reports |
The US number is genuinely contradictory and it is worth understanding why. Every American product firm we checked publishes $100–$300 an hour, yet Clutch’s own platform-wide average for the United States comes out at $50–$99 — below Canada. The reason is that a large share of “US” vendors on the platform are US-registered companies delivering from Latin America or India. The headquarters is American; the engineers are not. If you are comparing a genuinely American team against a nearshore one, the aggregate will mislead you by roughly half.
Minimum project sizes are worth checking separately, because they track vendor positioning rather than geography — the profiles we examined ranged from $5,000 to $250,000, with both extremes inside the same regions.
What each engagement model costs
The rate is only half of what each model costs you. The other half is how much of your own time and delivery risk it consumes.
| Model | Typical rate, EU vendors | What you also pay |
|---|---|---|
| Individual contractor | $25–$60/hr | Vetting, contracting and coordination, all yours. No knowledge retention when they leave, and the project stops if they do |
| Staff augmentation | $25–$60/hr | Code review, architecture and project management stay with you. Replacement means restarting onboarding |
| Dedicated team | $60–$120/hr per seat | Least of your time, most of the invoice. You manage deliverables instead of tasks, which fails silently if you cannot specify them |
The counterintuitive part: the cheapest hourly model consumes the most of the most expensive resource in the arrangement, which is your own attention. Price that before comparing rate cards.
Which model actually fits is a separate question from what it costs, and we answered it in depth in hiring dedicated developers: three models compared — including the screening process and the questions that expose a vendor’s real capability. This article stays on the numbers.

The costs that never appear on the invoice
Transition cost. Every engineer needs roughly a week to understand your environment before producing anything. Rotate people every month and a quarter of your budget goes on onboarding. Stability is not a soft value; it is a line item.
Your own hours. The cheapest model consumes the most of your time, and your time is the most expensive resource in the arrangement. Price it before you compare rates.
Rework. Code written by someone who will not maintain it is systematically more expensive than code written by someone who will. This is the single largest hidden cost in the low-rate models and the reason total cost frequently inverts the rate card.
What our own numbers look like
Our published band is $25–$49 an hour with a $5,000 minimum — the accessible end of the European range, deliberately.
The pattern in our own book is worth knowing before you set a budget. Across engagements closed since 2024, a typical first project is one role or one narrow scope at $1,500–$6,000. Where it works, the same client expands to $30,000–$90,000 within six to twelve months. Almost nobody starts with the full build.
Two things follow. If a vendor’s minimum requires $50,000 committed before you have seen anyone work, you are being asked to carry all the risk at the point where you know least. And the one role you start with should be the one currently blocking everything else, not the cheapest one to fill.

How to choose a dedicated development team
Work backwards from your constraint rather than from the rate card.
- Budget under $10,000 to start. Vendor minimums are the fastest filter — a $5,000–$10,000 minimum indicates a firm set up for early-stage work, $50,000 indicates enterprise procurement.
- One specific gap in a functioning team. Staff augmentation, from a vendor whose minimum matches the size of that one role.
- A new product line, loosely coupled to your existing system. A dedicated team.
- A three-week specialist problem. A contractor, and be honest that it is a transaction.
- You cannot yet describe what “done” looks like in writing. None of them. Fix that first; every model fails on the same input.
Whatever you choose, ask for the CVs of the specific engineers who would work with you rather than the vendor’s showcase profiles. The gap between what a vendor sells and who it actually staffs is where most of these relationships come apart. We wrote about that in our guide to evaluating engineering partners beyond the résumé, and compared the models in more depth in hiring dedicated developers: three models.
When paying more is the cheaper decision
Total cost inverts the rate card often enough that the cheapest quote is a poor default. It also means we are the wrong answer in two specific situations, and it is worth saying which.
If you want a single vendor to own a large enterprise programme end to end under a fixed-price statement of work, firms several times our size are a better call. If your problem is a three-week specialist task, hire a contractor and skip the agency overhead entirely.
Where we fit: you know which role is missing, you want it filled with someone screened properly, and you would rather start at $5,000 than $50,000. We work through staff augmentation, dedicated teams and IT staffing, as a group across three entities — Powercode in the UK, Scorpion Power GmbH in Berlin for DACH, and SpaceIT in Warsaw for EU-law delivery. A Munich client signs a German contract while the team sits in Poland.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire a software developer in 2026?
Published bands run from under $25 an hour in South and Southeast Asia, through $25–$99 in Latin America and $50–$99 in Central and Eastern Europe, to $100–$300 at American product firms. Our own band is $25–$49. Regional averages hide a lot: check the vendor’s published band and minimum project size directly rather than trusting a country figure.
Why do quotes for the same project vary by five times?
Three reasons, in order of size: where the engineers physically sit, how much of the delivery risk the vendor is absorbing, and whether the price includes people who are not writing code — a lead, QA, a project manager. A quote with no delivery risk attached is not comparable to one that carries it.
Is it cheaper to hire dedicated developers or a full team?
Per hour, individual developers. In total, it depends entirely on how much management you can absorb. Two augmented engineers cost less than a four-person team on paper and more in practice if you have no one to coordinate them.
What does it cost to hire dedicated developers in the UK?
Most UK vendors do not publish rates at all — the ones we checked disclose neither a band nor a minimum, and Clutch lists the UK aggregate as unknown. In practice UK-delivered work prices near the American range, which is why UK buyers are the largest source of nearshore demand in Europe.
How do I hire vetted developers rather than screening them myself?
Ask the vendor to describe their screening in stages, and ask what proportion of candidates fails each one. A vendor who screens seriously can answer immediately, because they measure it. A vendor who forwards CVs will describe a process without numbers.
How much extra does it cost to hire dedicated mobile developers?
Mobile does not carry a systematic premium over backend in published bands. What raises the price is specialisation within mobile — a Flutter or native specialist with fintech experience prices above a generalist, in the same way any narrow skill does.
How long before a hired developer is productive?
One to three weeks for a contractor on an isolated task, two to six weeks for an augmented engineer joining a team, three to eight weeks for a full team on a new product. Onboarding is usually the longer half of that and it is your cost, not the vendor’s.
What should a hiring dedicated development team contract cover?
IP assignment on creation rather than on payment, notice period, what happens if an assigned person is replaced, and who owns the infrastructure and documentation if you part ways. The replacement clause is the one most often missing and the one most often needed.

Hourly bands and minimum project sizes were taken from vendors’ public Clutch profiles and Clutch’s software development pricing guide, checked August 2026, and cross-referenced against published rate reports from Accelerance (November 2025), FullStack Labs (July 2026) and Uptech (February 2026). Where sources disagree, both figures are shown above rather than averaged.
