How to Choose an AI Agent Development Company
Choose an AI agent development company by testing its integration plan, access controls, acceptance checks and handover responsibilities.
Java and Spring engineering for APIs, application changes and production diagnosis
Hire Java developers from USD 36/h for Mid, from USD 40/h for Senior and from USD 46/h for Lead. Bring the Java and Spring versions, the first change and your release constraints. We will use them to define the engineering role and an initial work package, with the rate, capacity and start date confirmed in the offer.
A new API endpoint, a slow batch job and a framework upgrade require different starting points. State the application boundary, the behaviour you need to change and what must keep working. Include the runtime, framework, build tool and the people who own production releases.
If the application uses Spring Boot, check the requirements for its actual version. The official Spring Boot system requirements cover the supported runtime and build tools. Do not choose a Java version solely because it appears on a candidate’s profile.
For an established system, a useful first task leaves the team with a reproducible build, a small verified change and enough context to review the next decision. For a new component, agree its interface, data ownership and acceptance tests before committing to a larger build.
| Work to assess | What to review | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| API and domain behaviour | Ask the candidate to explain input validation, errors, compatibility and who consumes the interface. | An agreed contract and tests for normal and rejected requests. |
| Database access and transactions | Review query behaviour, transaction boundaries and how the change behaves with real data volumes. | A bounded change with a reproducible data example. |
| Concurrency and background work | Discuss repeated messages, competing updates, job retries and where a failure is recorded. | A test for the relevant repeat or conflict, not a vague reliability claim. |
| Build, test and deployment | Check the JDK, dependency setup, configuration, CI process and release ownership. | Another engineer can build, test and explain the release. |
Use a small endpoint, failing test or performance trace from a sanitised setting. Ask what information is missing, what the candidate would measure and how they would prove that the change preserves existing behaviour. A short explanation of the investigation often tells you more than a list of frameworks.
Separate implementation skill from architectural responsibility. A Lead brief may include cross-service decisions, while a Mid brief can focus on a defined feature with an established reviewer. Name that reviewer and the expected decision boundary in the role description.
“For an existing Java service, make the first task small enough to reproduce and review. A clear test and a working release path are more useful starting points than a broad migration promise.”
Bohdan Semenov, Head of Delivery at Powercode Group
| Role level | From USD/hour | Illustrative monthly arithmetic |
|---|---|---|
| Mid | from USD 36/h | USD 5,760 for 160 approved hours |
| Senior | from USD 40/h | USD 6,400 for 160 approved hours |
| Lead | from USD 46/h | USD 7,360 for 160 approved hours |
The monthly column multiplies the hourly floor by 160 approved hours. It is a planning illustration, not a minimum commitment, fixed monthly package or promise of availability. Compare all role families on our software development rate card.
Discuss the capacity your work needs, including a possible 20% allocation. Under the flexible model there is no minimum workload or term; agree the actual hours, working overlap and responsibilities in the offer. Use custom software development when you need to discuss the wider engagement as well as an individual role.
Illustrative example, not a client case: a nightly import overlaps with normal API traffic. The first work package is to capture the relevant timings, inspect query and transaction behaviour and reproduce the slowdown with safe test data.
Success for that package means the team can explain the bottleneck and review a proposed fix against an agreed measurement. It does not mean promising a percentage improvement before the investigation. Keep a separate release decision for any change to queries, scheduling or application configuration.
The published role card starts at USD 36/h for Mid, from USD 40/h for Senior and from USD 46/h for Lead. Approved hours, role mix and the agreed scope determine the total. Confirm the rate and working arrangement in the offer.
Yes. Start with the repository, runtime and framework versions, known issues, tests and deployment process. Use an initial investigation or defined change to establish the next work package.
Choose Java-focused capacity for backend application logic, APIs and data access. If the same role must own browser interfaces, add the actual frontend stack and review those skills separately. Do not assume the Java title covers every frontend requirement.
An upgrade brief should name the current and target versions, dependencies, affected integrations, tests and release constraints. Agree the investigation and compatibility work before giving the upgrade a fixed scope.
Provide a sanitised code or behaviour example, the expected output and relevant constraints. Ask for a reasoning trail, tests and a reviewable change rather than access to production or confidential customer data.
Send a short, sanitised brief describing the work, expected output, current team and working arrangement. Keep credentials and customer data out of the initial message.
For the wider decision, prepare an existing-system handover and define independent testing responsibilities.
